Guitar Repairs - Basic Maintenance

GUITAR MAINTENANCE IS ESSENTIAL TO KEEP YOUR PRIDE AND JOY LOOKING GREAT AND PLAYING BETTER, AND HERE’S HOW IT'S DONE…

In the excitement of owning your first instrument, guitar maintenance can be overlooked. Whilst some owners will appreciate that guitars need new strings from time to time, there are equally some who are unaware how important it is to not neglect regular string changes. The importance of regular string changes cannot be underestimated; From tuning instability to premature fret wear at its most serious are a few common causes of infrequent string changes. It is amazing the difference under the fingers and to the ears what a difference a simple re-string and good clean-up can do for your guitar. It's not expensive either, and in the long run can SAVE you money!

Usually, the best time for some general guitar maintenance is when we change the strings. This gives your access the fretboard and body, without having strings in the way.

CLEANING AND CONDITIONING THE FRETBOARD

  • Once we have removed the old strings, the fretboard is cleaned thoroughly. (The methods depend on the fingerboard surface we are working on)  Sometimes, deeper cleaning is required with a spirit based cleaner to remove grease and, dare we say it... Dead skin deposits!!!
  • Frets are then polished to a shine.
  • Lastly, we spray the fretboard with a conditioner, such as Lemon Oil, or a quality Linseed Oil. Remove the excess and allow to soak into the surface.
  • Fingerboard Nut Slots are cleaned and a graphite based lubricant applied to the slots before fitting a new set of strings, stretching in and bringing up to pitch.

CLEANING AND POLISHING THE BODY

  • Like the fretboard, firstly we remove the dust from the body with a clean, lint free cloth
  • Guitar polish is then applied and a thorough buff and polish.
